The Areal SR1: A New Approach to Immersive Headphone Audio
In this video, I take a first look at the Areal SR1 — a new set of fully immersive headphones from Belgian company Areal that takes a completely different approach to spatial audio reproduction. Rather than relying on a binaural renderer or software-based HRTF simulation, the SR1 uses multiple physical drivers inside each ear cup to deliver sound from different directions, allowing your actual ear geometry to do the work. Each cup houses one main driver and three smaller spatialisation drivers operating above 500 Hz, all powered by a dedicated audio interface that ships with the headphones and supports stereo, stereo upscaled, 5.1, and full 7.1.4 modes.
The SR1 is one of the most exciting pieces of headphone technology I have tested in a long time, and it genuinely delivers one of the best immersive impressions I have experienced outside of a fully customised HRTF measurement setup. That said, it is not without its compromises — the case is large, the system is heavy, the ear cups are small, and at €1,300 it sits in an awkward price bracket that may be too expensive for hobbyists yet not compelling enough for professionals who already have a treated studio. I cover all of this and more in the video, including a full walkthrough of the audio interface, the device menu, personalisation options, and my honest verdict on who this headphone is actually for.
